DESCRIPTION
NHK World Japan-News launched its first US-based, on-air broadcast studio and newsroom in the heart of New York City near Rockefeller Center on October 1, 2020. Provost Studio was engaged to provide turn-key scenic design/build and interior design services to deliver the approximately 2,500sf project.
The new headquarters included a 700sf, glass-surrounded broadcast studio looking out to the 1,500sf newsroom. Interior finishes and newsroom furniture were selected and coordinated with the architect and general contractor to ensure a seamless visual experience on-camera between studio and newsroom.
Creatively, we approached the design of the studio and newsroom as one unified space, incorporating the distinct NHK red brand color into the main anchor background shot with subtle cove lighting and a dimensional logo light-box over the shoulder.
The bold NHK red is further expressed on the floor as a continuous stripe that ties both studio and newsroom spaces together visually with one continuous gesture.
Within the shot, an all white and gray background was established with the flooring and furniture finishes while accent walls, painted NHK red, act as foreground elements.
